After a brief respite from Reddit, I joined anew and returned to the makeup subs I'd once frequented. In the past I'd seen Performance Colors touted a lot in r/Indiemakeupandmore, and one day while perusing the sub a redditor had posted a photo of some product in conjunction with a sale announcement. Since indies are already relatively inexpensive and usually have great deals, a sale is the cherry on top. I wanted to try. One click later (more like seven), the deed was done.
If you want to purchase from Performance Colors, expect to do so on Etsy. There is a parked domain performancecolorscosmetics.com that doesn't yet go anywhere, so either it's in limbo or someone is holding onto the domain rights.
The shop itself is small. Tiffany, the owner and producer, focuses predominantly on lip products but does sport some eye and face items as well. The shop sports just under 100 products, so you won't be browsing for long. I think the photography is some of the better kinds I've seen- it's well lit and showcases the product clearly, oftentimes swatched on a model for better context. You can also find them on Facebook.
Shopping, Service, and Shipping//
Shopping was simple. Etsy never really creates purchasing headaches, which I appreciate. I think I spent between 5 and 10 minutes looking through the inventory and figuring out the best lip products for me. Shipping was reasonable and there were no delivery issues. And, as per indie standards, Tiffany included a handwritten thank you on my invoice and threw in 3 samples. If you're reading this Tiffany, thank you!
I am a HUGE fan of these lip colors! They are wonderfully opaque without being patchy and have great moisturizing properties, too! Some of them have a light vanilla flavoring. The formula is very dense, so the product doesn't smoosh against the lips too much when emulsified by body heat. LOVE that. Nothing's worse than lip color that bleeds past the lip line and gives you clown face. A few swipes with these, and you're good to go!
I swatched each color with a clear lip pencil from Sephora and MAC Prep + Prime on the lips. Onto the swatches!
Hush is described as a neutral pink with hints of cocoa to warm it up. I must say this is one of the better matte neutral lip products I've ever encountered, and it really is a perfect MLBB (my lips but better). It's a step up from the sheer coverage a balm will provide, so it's the perfect product for a low maintenance look. I was hesitant to purchase but am SO glad I did! Tiffany, please do not ever stop making this product. You have hooked me with this perfect color and coverage combo. All you need are a few passes on the lips to get good color payoff. Hush is a passable dupe for the following colors: MAC Japanese Maple, Brave or Faux, and NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Stockholm or Istanbul.
Incognito is a beautiful, feminine pink with a wonderful purple component. In the sample container, it looked as if it would be too cool for my skin but I was pleasantly surprised at how good it looks. For reference, I have relatively neutral skin but it leans warm. The color isn't quite Barbie pink but it still has a girly feel to it. This will be wonderful for spring and summer! Incognito is somewhat similar to MAC Pink Nouveau or Creme de la Femme.
If you know me, you know I love my unconventional lip colors. Committed is a great addition to the ever-expanding range of weird lip colors in my makeup drawer. It's a velvety, desaturated blue with a touch of grey. For its color, it doesn't give you the lifeless blue lip aesthetic, nawmeen? Good coverage on this one, too. It has a slight sheen, which helps the color seem more lively. I sense a glitter goth mermaid look in my future...
Ahhhh, one of my FAVORITE colors from this purchase! Zombie Bride is described as a bruised purple with a blue sheen. You can see a hint of turquoise in the lower lip highlight. The color is so dimensional, a bit shimmery and very beautiful. I was slightly hesitant to buy because I thought it might be too cool on me, but there's just enough warmth in the formula to pull off. And, of course, I couldn't resist the name! In person you can really see the color change, but the photo shows a more true purple.
I covet dark lips, and Black Rose gives the perfect moody pout. Tiffany threw in a sample of this color and I'm really enamored. Black Rose reminds me of dark cherry flesh. It also conveniently matches my new hair pretty well. The formula is creamy and the finish is opaque with a hint of sheen. Black Rose is a winner! Possible dupe for NYX Vamp Lip Cream in She Devil or Aphrodisiac, and MAC Cyber.
Vamp's finish reminds me of Committed- both seem to have a muted, desaturated thing going on. Admittedly I'm not crazy about this color, but it wears really well and covers nicely. I think on me it looks too greyish purple. Or perhaps I've been looking at my own face too long.
This color is my favorite of the bunch! It reminds me of MAC Living Legend, a new matte shade they released recently. Again, color payoff and coverage are phenomenal. Who knew that indie lipsticks in chapstick tubes would rival some of the bigger names out there? This color is also relatively hydrating for being matte. I just love how dark it is without being black. HNNNNNNG.
10/10! I'm stoked to have found a small company whose products are of a good quality. Most matte lip products can be pretty drying, but Performance Colors lipsticks are hydrating without being smooshy or compromising the opacity and wearability of the color. They boast a wonderful deal that's inexpensive (buy 2 get the third free, $12), so get clicking! You're bound to find something for yourself, and maybe some friends! The holidays ARE coming up, after all.
